Stimuleren uitwisseling onderzoeksdata

Uit de SURF nieuwsbrief van 16 april 2013:

Het rapport ’The Value of Research Data – Metrics for datasets from a cultural and technical point of view’ adviseert een bredere uitwisseling en publicatie van onderzoeksdata door wetenschappers. Om dit te stimuleren dient een beloningssysteem voor wetenschappers te worden ontwikkeld op basis van data metrics. Een ander belangrijk aspect is dat de kosten van de publicatie van gegevens omlaag moeten. Ook is het essentieel dat de negatieve houding van wetenschappers ten opzichte van het publiceren van hun gegevens verandert. Het rapport adviseert een standaard te ontwikkelen voor het opslaan, publiceren, identificeren en citeren van datasets. 

Het rapport is in opdracht van Knowledge Exchange opgesteld door onderzoekers Rodrigo Costas, Ingeborg Meijer en Paul Wouters. Zij zijn allen verbonden aan het Centre for Science and Technology Studies van de Universiteit Leiden.

Nature Publishing Group : OA platform for data sets

"In a further sign of the growing scientific prominence of data sets, Nature Publishing Group has launched a new open-access platform that will peer review and publish detailed descriptions of their contents.

Scientific Data will publish “data descriptors”: citeable descriptions of the contents of data sets that will contain structured information created in-house by NPG. However, the platform will not host the datasets themselves. These must be made available via other public databases: ideally ones which are “recognised” within their research communities.

The platform, which will open for submissions in the autumn and launch in spring 2014, will focus initially on the life and environmental sciences, before expanding into other areas of the natural sciences."
